I thought I was really on to something when I starting using a few plates, napkins and cups a second time. When I suggested that the family start using things in the kitchen twice, I got a real dose of reality. They stood there and showed me all the things that really couldn't be used a second time. The real measure was how how often we needed to wash the dishes. There was no change. Those things that really could be re-used totalled a mighty small number. Small Green improvements only work if they can be either expanded over time, or can be applied over a large number of habits.
It's a reminder to Think Big. While we know small changes in lifestyle can make big improvements, the changes really need to be measurable. If re-using dishes doesn't result in using the dishwasher less often, it's not worth even thinking about. So stop thinking about it.
