You might have noted my previous experience with grocery shopping bags and laughed. Well in 2009 I finally got into the habit of taking my reusable shopping bags into the grocery store. And, to my surprise, once you do it a few times, it's much easier to remember to do it the next time. It's funny how the mind works like that. But I also noticed another hidden benefit.
Not only does my local grocery store give me a 5 cent credit for each bag I bring (I thought it was 3 cents), they are also more than happy to fill each bag. With their plastic bags, they are limited as to the number of items they can pack into it, but my bags are filled to the brim. This means fewer trips from the car to the kitchen, and underscores how wasteful the plastic bags are.
I used to think the cloth bags I was (not) using were a shameless promotion for my local realtor (her agency's name is emblazoned on the side), but now other shoppers in the checkout line compliment their nice construction. Who knew?
Oh, and now that you're in the habit, feel free to take those bags into other stores as well.
